چکیده

This paper presents a novel operational scheme for enhanced utilization of late-life shale multi-well systems. These systems are characterized by a large number of geographically spread wells and pads, where a substantial number of the wells are producing at low erratic rates due to reservoir pressure depletion and well liquid loading. By applying a cyclic shut-in and production strategy, the scheme avoids well liquid loading and optimizes the production from a set of late-life wells at a shared production pad. The scheduling of well shut-ins is formulated as a generalized disjunctive program (GDP), using a novel shalegas well and reservoir proxy model. The GDP formulation lends itself both to a complete MILP reformulation and reduced size MINLP reformulations; a computational study indicates in favor of the MILP formulation. We include numerical examples to demonstrate the potential benefit of applying the proposed cyclic scheme compared to a non-optimized approach.

Production Optimization in Shale Gas Reservoirs

Natural gas from organic rich shales has become an important part of the supply of natural gas in the United States. Modern drilling and stimulation techniques have increased the potential and profitability of shale gas reserves that earlier were regarded as unprofitable resources of natural gas. The most prominent property of shale gas reservoirs is the low permeability. This is also the reaso...

Lagrangian relaxation based decomposition for well scheduling in shale-gas systems

Suppressing the effects of liquid loading is a key issue for efficient utilization of mid and late-life wells in shale-gas systems. This state of the wells can be prevented by performing short shut-ins when the gas rate falls below the minimum rate needed to avoid liquid loading. In this paper, we present a Lagrangian relaxation based scheme for shut-in scheduling of distributed shale multiwell...

Investigation of the Main Factors During Shale-gas Production Using Grey Relational Analysis

Shale gas is one of the primary types of unconventional reservoirs to be exploited in search for long-lasting resources. Production from shale gas reservoirs requires horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing to achieve the most economic production. However, plenty of parameters (e.g., fracture conductivity, fracture spacing, half-length, matrix permeability, and porosity, etc) have high un...

Effect of Surfactant Adsorption on the Wettability Alteration of Gas-Bearing Shales

Water loss in low permeability reservoirs during hydraulic fracturing well completions typically results in a decrease in natural gas production due to capillary trapping near the fractures. Shale gas reservoirs, however, have shown a trend of improved gas production with increased loss of completion fluids to the shale. This nonintuitive relationship between water imbibition and enhanced gas p...
